Art off the Rock 2010 - Lot 21

Alfons Bytautas RSA

Screenprint

“Quartet”

approx 18 x 25.5cm

Background & Influences:
Alfons Bytautas was born in Selkirk in 1955. Later, whilst studying painting at Edinburgh College of Art, he was introduced to the technique of etching, marking the start of a life-long involvement with printmaking. In 1983 he studied in Paris at the celebrated printmaking studio, Atelier 17 – the studio of S.W. Hayter.

His work was previously more figurative and inspired by landscape but his most recent works explore the nature of reality through abstraction. Although he is keen to exploit recent developments in printing techniques, his work acknowledges a debt to the great traditions of European printmaking.
Alfons was a Master Printer & Senior Etching Technician at Edinburgh Printmakers until 2009, a post he held for 30 years. An exhibition of his new work, “Lost Time” was held at Edinburgh Printmakers Gallery in the summer of this year, marking an end to his time spent there.
He is currently employed as member of staff in the Fine Art Printmaking studio at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Exhibitions & Collections:
Alfons has exhibited widely and his work is held in many private and public collections including H M the Queen.

Membership of Professional Bodies:
He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1994, becoming an Academician in 2006.

Janet M. Melrose

The Riverbank

Acrylic 120x76cm

Background and Influences
Janet studied at Edinburgh College of Art under John Busby ARSA, RSW and William Baillie PPRSA, graduating in 1987 with a BA (Hons) in Drawing and Painting. After receiving the Andrew Grant Bursary in the same year, she continued her studies at the Lorenzo de Medici School of Art in Florence. Janet also received the Warsteiner Award at the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988. She was shortlisted for the J.D. Ferguson Award in 2005, received the Angus College open exhibition Purchase Prize in 2006 and shortlisted for the John Moores 24 in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Janet was also a finalist for the Aspect prize in 2009.
Janet works from her studio in Perthshire where she uses the influences of the natural world and our impact on it. Janet has recently developed ideas based on the walled garden at home as an enclosed space in which incidents take place; walking around the garden making drawings of plants growing out of stone walls, watching bees disappear into flowers and wrens flying between banking and the river. All these influences combine to produce paintings which are understated and at times have a sense of humour.

Exhibitions and publications
Janet’s has exhibited in numerous solo and mixed shows throughout Scotland, London and New York. Her work is in many collections including; Flemings Bank, The Bonham Hotel, The Lints Partnership SSC, Gardiner & Theobald, Royal Air Force, The Fringe Society, Holmes Place Plc and also in many individual private collections.. Harlequin Press featured her work in John Busby’s publication “Drawing Birds” and “Eight by Eight”. Janet’s paintings were also featured on STV “Home Show” in September 1998. Janet exhibits regularly in galleries along with undertaking commissions for private collectors.
