Alfons Bytautas RSA

“Orpheus”

Background & Influences:
Alfons Bytautas was born in Selkirk in 1955. Later, whilst studying painting at Edinburgh College of Art, he was introduced to the technique of etching, marking the start of a life-long involvement with printmaking.

In 1983 he studied in Paris at the celebrated printmaking studio, Atelier 17 – the studio of S.W. Hayter.
His work was previously more figurative and inspired by landscape but his most recent works explore the nature of reality through abstraction. Although he is keen to exploit recent developments in printing techniques, his work acknowledges a debt to the great traditions of European printmaking.
Alfons was a Master Printer & Senior Etching Technician at Edinburgh Printmakers until 2009, a post he held for 30 years. An exhibition of his new work, “Lost Time” was held at Edinburgh Printmakers Gallery in the summer of this year, marking an end to his time spent there.
He is currently employed as member of staff in the Fine Art Printmaking studio at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Exhibitions & Collections:
Alfons has exhibited widely and his work is held in many private and public collections including H M the Queen.

Membership of Professional Bodies:
He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1994, becoming an Academician in 2006.

Louise Scott

Background and Influences

Louise gained a BA Hons Degree in printmaking at Cheltenham College of Art back in the 80’s. Since then she completed a Post Grad in Countryside Management at Bangor College to enable her to live and work in the countryside. In 1992 she went to Orkney to work and stayed there for 17 years after marrying an Orcadian and bringing up two daughters. She had the Inkstone Gallery in South Ronaldsay where she displayed her work and also sold her work at craft fairs and trade shows down south.
In 2009 she moved to the West end of Glasgow with her 2 daughters and continues to work at the Glasgow Print Studios.

Exhibitions and memberships
Louise has attended the Pittenweem Art Festival for the past 4 years and has work at galleries such as the Iona Gallery, Isle of Iona: The Blue Door Gallery, Pittenweem and Julian Jardine Gallery, Perth.

She is a member of Member of Mugdock Makkers and Glasgow Society of Women Artists.

Philip Raskin

‘Towards Tiree’

Background & Influences:
Philip Raskin was born in Glasgow and attended the Glasgow School of Art in the nineteen sixties. The untimely death of his father however, forced Philip to abandon his studies and he is best known as the proprietor of The Inn on the Green restaurant in the city’s east end over which he and his wife presided for nearly twenty years. That establishment’s walls doubled as a quality art gallery and allowed Philip to keep in touch with the world of art and artists. Just after the millennium, Philip left the world of catering behind and returned to his easel and brushes.

His chosen subjects are land and seascapes but in effect they are predominantly skyscapes - he has a facility to portray movement and light in a quite magical and unique manner. This is complemented by his use of an impasto technique to capture the textures, ruggedness and multi-faceted aspects of a shoreline and its reflections. The overall result is to depict his native Scotland in an instantly recognisable handwriting, one which has resonated with the art-buying public.

Exhibitions and Collections:
Philip has quickly acquired a growing band of followers and collectors. His original paintings and limited editions are now to be found in High Street galleries and major art fairs throughout the UK and beyond.

Ann Wegmuller RSW RWS

‘Last Hill Light’

Background:
Ann Wegmuller studied art at Duncan of Jordanstone College, Dundee, graduating in 1985. Her numerous awards include the Mitchell Award; the Ryden Award; Scottish Arts Club Award and the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Prize. The RSW/ Riverside Gallery Exhibition Award 2008 RSW Council Award 2009.

Influences:
“Ann Wegmuller’s paintings seem to come from a view of the world coloured by weather, light and dark and their effect on mood. They represent the atmosphere and essence of a place as much as the reality.”

Louise Johnstone

‘A Question of Identity’

 Background:
Originally from Edinburgh and now living in Invergowrie Louise is employed as a lecturer in Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Louise studied at Duncan of Jordanstone between 1982 and 1986 when she graduated in Drawing and Painting. Her tutors included James Morrison and Will Maclean. Since her graduation as a mature student in 1986 she has had five solo shows and has taken part in many group shows throughout the country.

Influences:
Her work deals mainly with the female figure and take the form of paintings, low relief carvings and mixed media. She has also been commissioned to paint portraits. Her work has developed over the years from a pale light flooded palate with controlled handling to a bolder use of strong colour and energised brushwork and a more abstract representation of the female form. Although she used oil paint in her earlier work, the more recent work tends to be in acrylics.

Her paintings are held in many private collections in the UK and abroad. She is an elected member of the Visual Arts Society
