Lesley Banks

Bathroom Study

Background:
Lesley studied at Glasgow School of Art and received an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award. After travelling in Europe she worked in the Compass Gallery before taking up painting full-time. She was Artist in Residence at Edinburgh Zoo. She has received many awards including The Spectator, The Britannia Life Lord Provost Prize and The Royal Glasgow Institute Scottish Amicable Award.

Influences:
Her work is inspired by personal, everyday interiors including her own home. She is interested in how the past and the present overlap. Recurring images, such as empty birdcages, a white silk nightgown and crimson velvet bed-spread, thread the paintings together. Figures rarely engage with the viewer, intent on their own private thoughts or task. She creates an atmosphere of ambiguity and detachment from the outside world.

Exhibitions & Collections:
12 Solo Exhibitions including in 2009 “25 years Retrospective in the Park Gallery, Falkirk and featured in 2008 the RSA Annual. Public collections include Perth Art Gallery and Museum; BBC Television, Lillie Art Gallery and Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow. Private collections in Italy, Belgium, Singapore and Australia.

Jacqueline Marr

Background:
Jacqueline was born in Falkirk in 1977 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, from 1995 to 1999, graduating with a BA (Hons)

Exhibitions:
4 solo exhibitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Bridge of Allan.

Numerous group exhibitions since 1997. Recently featured at Art Fairs in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, London and Amsterdam

Collections:
Jacqueline’s work features in public collections in Scotland and London and her art has been referenced in many television programmes and publications.

Axel Scheffler

‘Tabby McTat’

Background:
Born in Hamburg in 1957, Axel Scheffler has achieved worldwide acclaim for his humorous illustrations for children’s books. At school, Axel won his first prize for drawing, awarded by an international chocolate company. His prize was a cuddly lilac cow! He moved to England to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art.

After graduating Axel moved to London and began illustrating for English and German advertising companies, magazines and newspapers. Faber commissioned him to illustrate The Piemakers by Helen Cresswell and The Bottle Rabbit by Bernard McCabe.

His award-winning partnership with author Julia Donaldson began when he was recommended to illustrate the text of ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’. Their next book, The Gruffalo, won the 1999 Smarties Gold Medal Award for picture books and the 2000 Blue Peter Award for The Best Book to Read Aloud. Axel illustrates for other authors including Ian Whybrow and David Henry Wilson. He has also designed Gordon Brown’s annual Christmas Card!

Will Maclean MBE

Background & Influences:
Will Maclean was born in Inverness into a family of fishermen. After spending two years in the Merchant Navy from the age of fifteen, he studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, from 1961 to 1967. In 1973 Maclean was commissioned by the Scottish International Education Trust to make a detailed study of the declining Scottish ring net fishing industry. This resulted in a collection of some 400 works, permanently in the Scottish National Gallery of modern Art. Since 1974 Maclean has made assemblages using found objects from the shore, as well as specially constructed items. Inspired by historical, literary and mythological aspects of Scottish seafaring history, Maclean’s box constructions are visual tales of the sea. He has lectured at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, eventually as Emeritus Professor

Awards, Exhibitions and Collections:

He was elected Royal Scottish Academician in 1991 and in 1997 he designed and as part of the team, won the Scottish Natural Heritage Supreme Award for three Memorial Cairns in Lewis. In 1999 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of St Andrews, winning the Scottish Arts Council Creative Scotland Award in the same year.

Will Mclean has had solo exhibitions in the UK, Canada and America, and many group exhibitions. His work can be found in many public collections in the UK and abroad.

June Carey

“Girl with a Bird”

Background:
June Carey studied at Glasgow School of Art. She became a member of Edinburgh Printmakers and thus began a lifelong love affair with printmaking. Discovering etching brought about a turning-point in her work and career.

Influences:
Her work is inspired by her travels through South East Asia and India: “I did not quite expect my senses to be so overwhelmed by the intensity of the rich colour, decoration, opulence and spiritual presence… of this very diverse country, with its incredible mix of different cultures, customs and religions.” June Carey.

Exhibitions & Collections:
10 solo and over 50 prestigious group exhibitions, including Royal Academy of Art, London; McLellan Galleries, Glasgow; Franco Scottish Exhibition, Montpellier; Barbican Centre, London. Her work features in the collections of the Scottish Arts Council, BBC Television, Peter Gabriel, Arts in Fife and Lady Thyne. Professional Member of SSA and AAS.

2008 Artist in Residence at Engramme, Quebec City – G.P.S. and Glasgow City Council. Anne Redpath Award, Scottish Arts Club Award, The Hope Scott Trust Award, European City of Culture, ‘Woman 2000’.
