Background:
Born in Falkirk, Barbara Rae studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where she won a scholarship to travel in France and Spain. A highly acclaimed painter, her style is abstract, with free application of strong colours and a range of materials.
Influences:
She studied under Sir William Gillies and was greatly inspired by his work. She derives inspiration from her journeys far and wide, from the Highlands of Scotland to exotic South African coasts.
Exhibitions & Collections:
Her work has been exhibited internationally and throughout the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Show, London; Art First, London and The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.
Her work can be found in public and private collections around the world.
Barbara Rae was elected a Royal Academician in 1996, is a
Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists, a
Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters and a Full Member of the Royal Scottish Academy. Barbara was awarded a CBE in 1999 and a Doctorate from Napier University, Edinburgh in the same year.
